Food prep.

Food prep.

It’s been a long time coming, but food box prep is finally under way!  It’s an interesting way to think about food, when you have to consider how many calories per ounce.

Here, Jeri Lynn is calculating how many calories are contained in the 4 boxes that will be mailed out for resupply week #1.  All of these boxes will be sent to Neel’s Gap.

Each day, we will have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, and another snack before drifting off to sleep.  The goal is to consume about 3000 calories per day, while we are in the milage building period.  Later, we will consume 4000-4500 calories per day.

There are many ways to approach nutrition on the trail.  Though some hikers are known to eat snickers bars dipped in marshmallow fluff, I cannot bring myself to destroy our guts by doing that.  It is, however, completely unrealistic to think that we could accomplish the task before us, without some compromise.  Somewhere between the clean eating, paleo diets and the consumption of all things ramen and the likes, is where we are finding ourselves.

We have added Juice Plus to our nutrition plan to make up for the fact that packing fruits and vegetables in our packs is just not a possibility.  Juice Plus for breakfast as well, in the form of plant based nutrition shakes.

Kind bars, Clif bars, Lara bars, peanut m&m’s, oatmeal, soup mixes served atop rice, pasta, or potatoes, are just a few of the items that we plan to consume each day!!!

Have I mentioned how much  I’m gonna miss my kitchen and refrigerator?

Deep breath… I hope time allows down a bit, because we are closing in on the 72 hour window, and by the looks of things you would not think we were near ready to set off on this wild adventure!  More about that mess to come!
